چکیده

A congenital malformation is an anatomical or structural abnormality present at birth. Congenital malformations may be caused by genetic factors or environmental insults or a combination of the two that occur during prenatal development. Most common congenital malformations demonstrate multifactorial inheritance with a threshold effect and are determined by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. During the first two weeks of gestation, teratogenic agents usually kill the embryo rather than cause congenital malformations. Major malformations are more common in early embryos than in newborns; however, most severely affected embryos are spontaneously aborted during the first six to eight weeks of gestation. During organogenesis between days 15 to 60, teratogenic agents are more likely to cause major congenital malformations. The variety of these associated syndromes with specific teratogenic agents is discussed below.

Effects of Multivitamins and Known Teratogens on Chick Cardiomyocytes Micromass Culture Assay

Objective(s): This study aimed to find out whether the chick cardiomyocyte micromass (MM) system could be employed to predict the teratogenecity of common environmental factors. Different multivitamins and over the counter drugs were used in this study.   Materials and Methods: White Leghorn 5-day-old embryo hearts were dissected and trypsinized to produce a cardiomyocyte cell suspension in D...

Succinate, glycerophosphate and ascorbate as sources of cellular energy and as antiteratogens.

Our experimental findings show that succinate and ascorbate greatly reduce the teratogenic effects of 3-acetylpyridine, 6-aminonicotinamide and sulfanilamide. Glycerophosphate led to similar alleviating results when used in combination with 3-acetylpyridine and 6-aminonicotinamide, but not with sulfanilamide. With certain other teratogens the high-energy intermediates failed to alleviate; in so...

James G. Wilson's Six Principles of Teratology

James Graves Wilson's six principles of teratology [4], published in 1959, guide research on teratogenic agents and their effects on developing organisms. Wilson's six principles were inspired by Gabriel Madeleine Camille Dareste's five principles of experimental teratology [4] published in 1877. Teratology is the study of birth defects [5], and a teratogen is something that either induces or a...

Plants Associated with Congenital Defects and Reproductive Failure (3-Mar-2004)

Considerable livestock losses occur annually as the result of toxic plants that cause embryonic death, abortion, and fetal abnormalities [1-3]. Plant toxins also interfere with reproduction through their effects on male fertility, especially by affecting spermatogenesis. The plant species that have been historically associated with abortion and infertility in livestock are listed in Table 8-1. ...

Congenital cataract following German measles in the mother. 1941.

In Australia in the 1940s, Norman McAlister Gregg observed a connection between pregnant women who contracted the rubella virus, or German measles, and cataract formation in their children's eyes. Gregg published his findings in the 1941 article "Congenital Cataract following German Measles in the Mother" in Transactions of the Ophthalmological Society of Australia. In the article, Gregg analyz...

Critical periods for behavioral anomalies in mice.

While mice have been used less frequently than rats in behavioral research, there use has some advantages in teratological studies. The development of the mouse CNS has been investigated more extensively than that of the rat. Since time of insult has been found to be an important factor in effects on both anatomy and behavior, data on the sequence of events in CNS development are valuable in pl...
